Obviously since we’re talking about Colorado, you’ll want to consider weather into your plan. Alta Lakes would be impassable during heavy snow, at least I would not attempt it, however, the town of Telluride is a major ski/snowboard draw so it provides year around entertainment.

Flying in? Telluride Regional Airport

~Location: Telluride is in the south-western region of the state, 110 miles from Durango and accessible by air as well as paved highway that is plowed in the winter. Check the status re: chain requirements in winter months.

~Ranger Station: Norwood Ranger District 2250 Highway 50
Delta, Colorado 81416
(970) 874-6600

~Nearest Town And Amenities: Alta Lake is about 6 miles from Telluride but time-wise 25 minutes due to traversing the dirt/rock road. Telluride is a mecca for skiers but in the summer months the wildflowers will rock your soul. The town itself is lovely and avoids chain restaurants in favor of individually owned business. Check for the farmer’s market, it is great. Coffee? Yep and with free WIFI at The Steaming Bean.

~Campground/s: Our experience was limited to Alta Lakes. Fee: NONE. Pit toilets. Stone fire rings. Accessed by dirt/rock road. Gorgeous scenery and lovely lakes with drinking water if you purify. Hiking trails including one to Alta Lakes Ghost Town, a short distance (1/4th mile).

Paddle-boarding? Yes

Fishing? Yes

~Warnings: The road is a little rough but my Hyundai made it, just take it easy.

~Suggestions: Sunset, DON’T MISS IT!

  1. We love the Telluride area! Two USFS campgrounds are right off of hwy. 145 south of town, very close to the turnoff for Alta Lakes: Sunshine CG ($18/night) has awesome views of the Wilson Group of fourteeners to the west, and Matterhorn CG ($22/night) has SHOWERS! Another tip: park at the parking garage in Mountain Village and ride the gondola over the mountain into Telluride and back, all for FREE!
